Samsung Electronics Canada Inc., in cooperation with Health Canada, today announced it will provide free knob locks or covers to owners of certain slide-in electric ranges with front-mounted knobs as part of a voluntary recall. The affected models were sold in the Canada from 2013 to 2024. This announcement follows reports that front-mounted range knobs can be activated through accidental contact by people or pets, posing a fire hazard if flammable objects are left on top of the range. Samsung Canada is providing slide-in electric range customers with a set of free knob locks or covers, depending on their model, to prevent accidental activations from occurring.
To receive a set of free knob locks or covers, depending on their model, customers can visit www.samsung.com/ca/support/slide-in-electric-range-knob-kit, contact Samsung toll-free at 1-833-775-0120 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET, or 24/7 via live chat.
Samsung range knobs meet industry safety standards established by UL Standards & Engagement – including a two-step activation requiring sequential ‘push and turn’ movements – and consumers may continue to use their slide-in electric ranges while awaiting their set of free knob locks or covers. Consumers should always be mindful of accidental activation and never leave anything on their range top surface when it is not in use.
Samsung recommends consumers follow these range-safety precautions, regardless of range type or manufacturer:
Samsung Canada remains committed to delivering high-quality, innovative and safe products that enhance customers’ lives. Introduced in April of 2024, all new Samsung slide-in ranges include the industry’s first built-in three-step Precision Knobs, requiring an additional ‘pinching’ action before the ‘push and turn’ to ensure knobs are only activated intentionally.
This latest advancement builds on Samsung’s already existing safety features designed to notify consumers of accidental activation:
As the #1 range brand in Canada[1] with a commitment to consumer safety, we are participating in ongoing conversations hosted by the United States’ Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Joint Gas and Electric Range Knob Working Group, which includes representatives from Health Canada, where major brands across the appliance industry discuss how to revisit knob safety standards for all ranges to address inadvertent activation.
